BCTC Evacuation – Friday, April 17, 2026
Just before lunch today, during second session, we immediately evacuated students and staff because of the presence of smoke throughout the main hallway and in one of our spare classrooms. The Everett Fire Department was onsite immediately to evaluate and determine the cause of the smoke. A condenser in one of our heat pumps failed and significantly overheated which caused the odor and smoke in the spare classroom and throughout the halls. The unit has since been completely shut down and is no longer a risk.
Once smoke was detected, all students and staff were immediately evacuated and evacuated safely, following our evacuation procedures. The fire company subsequently cleared the building for re-occupancy, and second session students were able to briefly return at the end of the second session to gather belongings and board buses for dismissal.
We had to cancel third session for students today because of transportation notification timing (condenser unit was in the process of being cleared by the Fire Department) and lingering odor/smoke. Fans were used to dissipate the odor and bring in fresh air and return the air quality to normal conditions.
The safety and well-being of our students and staff remains our top priority. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you for your understanding and continual support. If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael O’Dellick

Dear Parents, Students, and Staff,
The Bedford County Technical Center is committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students and staff. Out of an abundance of caution, the school was evacuated earlier today due to a sewer-like/propane odor detected inside the building. The Everett Fire Company responded to a non-emergency request to assess the situation and to ensure there were no harmful fumes or leaks present. After a thorough inspection, they determined that there were no gas leaks present and the building was safe for occupancy.
As an additional precaution, our propane gas provider, AmeriGas, was contacted to inspect all propane tanks and connection points on the school campus. AmeriGas found the tank that services our main building was empty. We were informed by AmeriGas that the faint odor we were smelling was likely the additive used in the tank that can become very strong when a tank is empty.
Once the propane tank was filled the odor became more pronounced. After further inspection by AmeriGas, a leak was identified at a gas regulator that services the building and on a gas line fitting. Upon detection of the leak, the gas service to the building was immediately shut off. Gas service to the main building will remain off until AmeriGas completes a thorough repair of the system. The service interruption only impacts our domestic hot water heater which may temporarily suspend our hot water service; however, the school will remain open and will continue normal operations.
In conclusion, the building has been cleared for re-occupancy and there is no threat to the safety and well-being of students and staff. The safety of our students and staff remain our top priority. While we understand this situation may have caused some concern, please know that our safety protocols were activated immediately to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
